Olympus spot perhaps a bit too impressive?

June 22nd, 2010 admin

The reveal in this Mullen ad for the Olympus PEN camera explains its preceding pastiche of oddball imagery. However, it is kind of a tease. As commenters have pointed out, the PEN E-PL1 shoots in 720p, a lower quality than this ad, which was post-produced up to 1080p. In other words, nothing you shoot with the PEN is going to look quite this good unless you also happen to be a film editor. The good news is that 720p is more than enough to take a decent picture of dogs dressed up like bees. UPDATE: Mullen responds after the jump . —Posted by David Kiefaber In an e-mail, Mullen replies:   “In…

Bruins bear, Cam Neely face off in new spot
The guy in the bear suit returns in Mullen’s latest video for the Boston Bruins, this time staring down legendary B’s tough guy Cam Neely. I think Cam’s the one wearing pants. The spot promotes a jersey commemorating the upcoming New Year’s Day Winter Classic game against the Flyers at Fenway Park. A hockey game at Fenway,...
U.K. fire-safety ad filmed totally under water
The British government is raising awareness about house fires with the TV ad above, filmed entirely under water at Pinewood Studios . The message is that toxic smoke is much like water in its ability to hinder one’s breathing and quickly incapacitate a person. But it makes for a bit of a mixed visual metaphor, as viewers inevitably think of...
Honda CR-V is impressive just in the garage
This elaborate and fantastical Australian spot by Draftfcb for the 2010 Honda CR-V was shot in a high-rise parking structure. There’s white-water kayaking, acrobats in a stage show, a soccer match where the field comes to life, anthropomorphized orange slices (juicy!), folks making snowmen during a blizzard … and a car wash. That’s...
Skaters lit on fire in Burn energy-drink spot
Skateboarders are annoying, and from time to time we’ve all fantasized about setting them ablaze. But Publicis Mojo and Exit Films went and did so in this short film touting Coca-Cola’s Burn energy drink. No, seriously, they claim to have literally set the dudes on fire during the shoot. Those riders need a union, stat. (Even the Old...
Predators, prey feel the love in Travelers ad
You’ll definitely want Travelers insurance before you go on safari. In one of its new ads from Fallon, the company claims to be able to subvert the laws of nature for safety’s sake. I don’t care how sexy Flo’s lips are, she can’t make lions and zebras be friends. A second ad, posted after the jump, illustrates why offroading...
The Vanishing of the Bees
Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomen has brought beekepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and hundred of other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate...
Sprite cools rapping cyborg’s inner circuitry
This Sprite commercial from BBH New York confirms what I’ve suspected about Canadian rapper Drake for years: He’s a robot. Whether his reaction to Sprite is an essential recalibrating function, or merely what happens when someone pours soda into working machinery, isn’t clear. But he certainly does seem awfully refreshed afterward....
Calgary high-rise’s low-rent ads get pulled
A Calgary condo project’s sexist ads have been yanked after an offended actor raised a ruckus about them. And not without cause, judging by the copy on the poster shown here. The ads were aimed at young professional men, and were put up in nightclub restrooms and other places where their prized misogynist douchewaffle audience would see them....
100,000 live bees plead for help on billboard
Honey-bee populations are mysteriously dwindling worldwide. In England, the Banrock Station winery created the ” world’s first ad with live bees ” to call attention to the problem. They used queen-bee pheromones to attract a giant swarm of bees (as many as 100,000, according to the BBC) from a nearby honey farm to spell out an “SOS”...
Japan ads courting feline business travelers
I don’t speak Japanese, but I’m pretty sure this hotel booking Web site is setting itself up, in the ad below, as the premier travel planner for today’s business-cat. Considering Hello Kitty’s inexplicable popularity, overlooking this market could be a mistake. But the point, I think, is to show how user-friendly the Web site...
