Campbell Mithun’s fast-paced back-to-school ads for Famous Footwear use a time-slice filming technique to freeze everyday teen moments of fun. New to this mid-tier, shoe-retailer category, the process involves using a 20-camera rig (all cameras snap simultaneously) and Canon 5D camera. You can view the finished ad here Famous Footwear – Back To School / Make today famous  Read More →

Given the high number of views, I am obviously not the first one to talk about this stunning stop motion video. They shot 60,000 pictures, developed 9,600 prints and then again shot over 1,800 pictures. And apparently without any post production! Thanks to all the stop motion artists who inspired us. Stunning, right? (thank you Markus)  Read More →

Maker Faire Detroit opens tomorrow [Saturday] – the first ever held in America’s cradle of industry and what many view today as a post-industrial laboratory for the future. The two day event will be packed with inspiration and enjoyment for people of all ages and walks of life, including Maker Faire favorite The Life-size Mousetrap , hot-rodded Power Wheel racing, demonstrations on everything from circuit-bending to screen printing,...

It’s a Friday, so I feel free to rail out at what I see as ridiculous or wasteful design, especially projects that get tons of blog attention for being “stunning.” I don’t know what Colier Sparkling Wine’s eco-credentials are, but this packaging can’t be green; the bizarre container the bottle comes in, “targeted to [sic] business women [sic],” looks like a carbon-fiber egg. For God’s sake...

Last week I published this: “How 'Inception' Became the New World Cup (and/or Justin Bieber).” But guess what? Bieber himself is back, baby!  Read More →

A collaboration between Nathan Love and NBC Artworks, this short animation explores the origins of the NBC logo. The origins of the feathers are from some evil spirit-seeds swallowed by the peacock, it appears. Hehe. Nathan Love explains; “The brief was to create a stand-alone logo animation for NBC. The only guidelines were to make it our own, and of course, for it to be ‘the best logo ever.’” It might just be the funniest logo...

Like Time Inc. titles before it, this one will only be sold on a single-issue basis, as publishers work behind the scenes to try to get Apple to approve subscription sales  Read More →

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — When WikiLeaks released a huge cache of classified reports on the war in Afghanistan, it did so in a strange alliance that had The New York Times, The Guardian and the German weekly Der Spiegel coordinate a timed release of their narratives on the material. Just how those cats were able to herd themselves — and not claw up the source of the material, which also happened to be a publisher of it — was captured...

In office furniture design we’ve seen tons of would-be successors to the cubicle, but nothing’s really taken root yet. The latest to throw their hat into the ring is Italian furniture manufacturer Tecno , with their Red-Dot-Award-winning Beta workplace , designed by Pierandrei Associati: Beta is a fresh furniture system that addresses the needs of the creative office. Using flexible system elements, offices can be creatively reconfigured...

Photographer Sergey Larenkov uses computational rephotography (as shown above and explained here by Wired ) to overlay extant WWII-era photographs on their corresponding modern settings. The results are both spooky and stunning: The shots really do have to be seen large, so check out Larenkov’s LJ page for the rest of ‘em. via gizmodo (more…)  Read More →

Restaurant chain Denny’s has selected four finalists to compete for creative duties on its nearly $60 million advertising account, the client has confirmed. The shops, identified by Denny’s as MDC Partners’ Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal + Partners, Omnicom Group’s BBDO and Interpublic Group’s Gotham and Erwin-Penland, have been briefed and will make final presentations in mid-August. The winner will succeed Omnicom’s...

When word began circulating a year and a half ago that Machete might become a reality , I doubted that the actual movie could ever live up to the fake trailer that was featured in Grindhouse . But judging by the new (and very NSFW) red-band trailer shown below, Machete’s  star-studded casting hasn’t stopped it from having all the nudity and over-the-top gore that the original preview promised. Machete won’t just cut you. He’ll...

The environmental movement UnF—k The Gulf is only putting into words (well, one specific word) how most of us have felt about the BP oil spill, and their edginess is balanced out by cool ideas like letting donors vote on which charities get their money. So of course, the group is getting death threats from gomers who think actual violence is less objectionable than rude language.  Read More →

There are two ways to view TracyLocke’s first salvo for Old Country Buffet. It could be seen, and was probably intended, as a hip-yet-goofy, so-bad-it’s-good, wink-wink, post-modern, faux-fantasy foray. But with that many hyphens, it’s probably best to just call this one misguided. The guy in the top hat  —  Willy Wonka’s bastard brother? Failed Batman villain?  —  does look like he’s dressed for a buffet:...
